Wet scrubbers for challenging applications

Wet scrubbers

Wet scrubbers are mostly used on industrial applications which release dust and other particles that are difficult or impossible to handle with dry filtration solutions like explosive dust, combustible dust or sticky and fibrous dusts.

Wet scrubbers are used for the removal of solid, liquid and gaseous pollutants from gas streams. This is achieved by collecting the pollutants on a scrubbing liquid injected into the gas stream and separating them from the gas stream together with the scrubbing liquid.

The removal mechanisms for the capture of particulates and gas molecules differ significantly. Wet separators can be classified according to design features or method of liquid feed.

The selection of the scrubber type is application-specific and depends on the required air volume, the pollutants to be separated, the particle size and the dust load in the process exhaust air.

Camfil, with its product portfolio, specialises in Vortex scrubbers and Venturi scrubbers, which remove particulate matter from industrial applications including flying sparks, fibres, sticky or wet dust, and combustible and explosive dust.

Compared to a dry dust extraction system using filter elements, wet scrubbers usually use water as filter media. The functional principle of the wet scrubbers make use of the principle of mass inertia, through which the particle-laden process exhaust air is integrated into fine water droplets, thereby increasing the mass of the particles and thus safely separated.

Afterwards, the cleaned air can be returned back into production or out of the facility. The collected wastewater and the filtered solid substances have to be divided and disposed of correctly via appropriate waste streams.

Wet scrubbers are often used in industries like the metal processing industry, automotive industry, the manufacturing of medical devices, foundries, and food or plastic processing plants.
