The most important task for an air filter is to reduce the number of particles and pollutants in the ventilation air and provide high quality of indoor air (IAQ). Therefore low energy consumption should never be prioritized over efficient air filtration and good air quality. However, this does not have to be exactly the opposite. Saving energy is necessary not the most important reason to change, but it is an aspect to consider. Nevertheless, some additions need to be made if you look at what filters you have in the property and how they affect energy consumption without compromising human health.

We are all aware that air pollution can cause serious health problems. There is evidence and connections related to health effects such as asthma, lung cancer, ventricular hypertrophy, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, psychological complications, autism, retinopathy, fetal growth, and low birth weight, etc. It is incredibly important to have a good indoor environment and the making the right choice when selecting air filtration solutions. The most important task of a filter is to reduce particles and pollutants from the indoor environment.
The first step is to find out what degree of purification is required. This can be done with examples, tips, and advice on ISO standard 16890 or Eurovent 4/23. Once the requirements for the degree of filtration have been determined, the right filter solution can be selected. Thereafter, it is important to ensure that the requirement for particle separation is met throughout the life of the system. Then pressure drops and air flows are optimized to reduce energy use.

It is known that most dangerous particles that are indoors come from outside, and the only way not to get them into offices, schools, hospitals, etc., is to eliminate them with an effective supply air filter.

SAVE ENERGY WITHOUT AFFECTING THE EFFICIENCY OF THE FILTER!

To keep the pressure drop as low as possible and save energy costs within the different filter classes, the filter's construction/design is of the utmost importance. Increasing the amount of filter media, choosing the right media, and optimizing the shape of the bags results in lower pressure drops.

Through a conical seam inside the bags which prevents them from blowing together (blocking the filter surface), the airflow is further promoted, which also reduces energy consumption. This is done without compromising the efficiency of the filter (degree of separation).

Important things to consider:

  1. Select filter according to desired filtration class/requirement
  2. Choose the filter that gives the lowest energy impact

All air filters can be classified from A + to E, where A + stands for the lowest energy consumption and E for the highest.

The classification gives customers a better understanding of the annual energy consumption, average efficiency, and lowest efficiency. You can see that an A + filter contributes to reduced energy use and carbon dioxide emissions. Based on an extensive certification process, Eurovent-certified products must show annual energy consumption (kWh / year) specifically for each ISO efficiency rating and be tested in independent laboratories and by random sampling of the manufacturer. The certified data is available on Eurovent's website: www.eurovent-certification.com

Life Cycle Cost

Life cycle cost determines the user's costs for cleaning the air during the entire user phase.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

To get an overall understanding of how considerable the total environmental impact is, the life cycle assessment (LCA) is designed. It is a method for assessing a product's environmental impact where the goal is to get an overview of how extensive the total environmental impact is during a product's life cycle from raw material extraction, through manufacturing processes, application, and waste management, including all transportation and energy consumption throughout the product life cycle.

Ett filters livslängd och miljöpåverkan
The life of the filter is crucial for the filter's environmental impact. The amount of energy the fan uses to draw the air through an air filter accounts for about 90% of the filter's total climate impact.

The most important measure to reduce the environmental impact from the use of air filters is thus to reduce the average pressure drop across the filter as it affects energy use. Read our environmental impact section to understand more.
